ELNs Electronic Laboratory Notebooks: Lists of ELNs

Recent ELN Development

With the introduction of tablets, apps and the cloud, an increase in the number of ELNs/virtual workspaces have appeared recently. Some examples are listed here. If you find others you like, please leave me a comment. If you are thinking of implementing a system for classroom use, please let me know. I've provided the following information for each entry:

  1. How is the software hosted and data stored, e.g. web, cloud, server and by company or locally
  2. Controlling access is related to restricting to specific areas of the ELN. Incomplete control means access is based on user type and specific areas cannot be restricted.
  3. The related features date/time stamped, digital signature, and 21 CFR Part 11 compliant are important for patent and tech transfer, but documenting who did what, when is becoming more important for all research
  4. Platforms the software is compatible with can include Mac, Windows, Linux and recently tablets and smartphones have been added to the list.
  5. Customers are usually charged by subscription but some vendors use the perpetual user license model. Watch out for other fees, e.g. training, updates, support, setting up, creating templates, etc.
  6. The feature to import data is usually present, but not so with exporting data. If you are investigating which ELN to use this is a must. The ability to export is also important for those leaving the lab.
  7. Trial periods are generally free and a good idea if you have never used an ELN before.
  8. ELNs are moving away from being restricted to the bio and chem lab tests of the pharmacy world and becoming more inclusive. Templates may be provided, adaptable for specific needs by the user or created entirely by the user.

These products have been (or are being) assessed in trials at other institutions. See the tab on Implementation at Other Institutions.

LabArchives  Data is stored on LabArchives’ servers, but can also be stored on local servers. Provides control over user access. Research is date and time stamped. Digital signature available. 21 CFR Part 11 compliant. Platforms include Windows, Mac, Linux, iPad and Android. Subscription based. Data can be exported. Trial period templates Provides a classroom edition.

eCat is now called RSpace. Service is cloud-based. Provides control over user access. Research is date and time stamped. Digital signature available. 21 CFR Part 11 compliant. Platforms include Windows, Mac, iPad/iPhone. Subscription based. Data can be imported and exported. Trial period is available. Provides a library of templates or you can create your own.

Irisnote (formerly CERF) Service is cloud-based, but can be hosted on local cloud. Provides control over user access. Research is date and time stamped. Digital signature available.  21 CFR Part 11 compliant. Platforms include iPad, Mac OS X, and Windows. Expect to release a version to include Android, Linux and other mobile devices by Jan 2014. Perpetual user license or  subscription based. Data can be imported and exported. Trial period is available. Templates are customized by IrisNote or administrators – will be updated sometime in 2013. It’s modular allowing for connections to other systems. It’s scalable to accommodate a few or thousands of users. Irisnote went out of business. Support and subscriptions can be obtained at Lab-Ally.

SparkLix now called Docollab. Service is cloud-based. Free to use. Insufficient information provided by website or company to make a decision about its worth.

iLabber Service can be cloud or server-based. Provides control over user access. Research is date and time stamped. Digital signature available.  21 CFR Part 11 compliant. Platforms include Mac, Linux and Windows. Will release iPad/iPhone app after summer 2014. Subscription based. Data can be imported and exported. Trial period is available. You create your templates. Templates can be public or private. For “small and mid-size R&D organization”

I have found no institutional assessments of these products-

From the University of Southampton, LABTROVE  Service is server-based on a local server. Incomplete control over user access.  No information on date/time stamped, digital signature, and  21 CFR Part 11 It is Web-based, in a blog format and open source You create your templates. Data can be imported and exported

ELNs at the U

VisTrails  was developed at the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute by Prof Juliana Friere.

Software Development Center  is a collaboration of the Technology Commercialization Office and Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute

Emulab  is a testbed for research on networked computer systems. Emulab was developed by the Flux Research Group, School of Computing. It  provides researchers with computing, storage, and network resources on which to run a wide variety of experiments. Emulab is being used by over 4,500 researchers in computer science worldwide.

The Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) application is a browser based tool that allows investigators and/or their staff to create web based case report forms (CRFs) and surveys to collect data from a variety of clinical research study types. This ELN is also good for mouse colony management. The data are stored on 21 CFR 11 compliant servers. See Biomedical Research Informatics Service Core (BRISC)
