Getting Started

This guide from Ken Rockwell and Anna Neatrour will provide an overview with examples of how to use the Library of Congress Authorities (http://authorities.loc.gov/) to find subject headings and personal names. This guide is designed for people working in Special Collections at the Marriott Library.

Assess the subject matter of the collection and pull out keywords that you could use to find appropriate Library of Congress Subject Headings.

If you are describing the collection of an individual or an organization, or if there are individuals mentioned prominently in the collection materials, look up their names in the Library of Congress name authorities.
