Understanding legal citations is essential to performing legal research efficiently. A citation is a reference to a primary or secondary legal authority. When a judge or lawyer references a case, a statute, a regulation or a treatise, they provide a citation at the end of the reference. Citations often contain abbreviations which can be confusing if the researcher is unfamiliar with the resource.

This guide explains how to cite cases, statutes and regulations in Utah's Federal and State courts.
