Slave Quarters at Monticello (Britannica Image Quest)
From Anna Berkes, librarian at Monticello: "It’s Mon-ti-chel-oh, the Italian pronunciation. We don’t have any evidence from Jefferson himself that he pronounced it that way, but he did speak Italian, so we assume that he would have given it the correct Italian pronunciation. Also, several contemporary visitors spelled it Montichello, – it seems most likely that they were spelling it the way they had heard it pronounced."
