How to get library materials from other libraries for free

Distance Education Patrons: Contact Interlibrary Loan to Request Home Delivery

You will be asked to provide your University of Utah ID, email, phone number and delivery address.

Students eligible for home delivery are:

  • Current University of Utah students in degree and certificate granting programs
  • Enrolled in a UOnline, distance learning class or working on thesis or dissertation hours
  • Living in the United States
  • Living further than 75 miles away from the J. Willard Marriott Library
  • Not attending a physical class that meets within 75 miles of the Marriott Library at least once a week

  • Not visiting campus one or more times per week

Staff who qualify for home delivery of interlibrary loan Items are:

  • Living more than 75 miles from the J. Willard Marriott Library
  • Not visiting campus one or more times per week

  • J. Willard Marriott Library interlibrary loan is for the use of students, faculty and staff of the University of Utah.
  • Health sciences patrons submit requests through Eccles Health Sciences Library and law school patrons submit requests through James E. Faust Law Library.
  • Distance education patrons may request to have their Marriott Library interlibrary loan materials mailed to their home address.
  • Materials are shipped with instructions for their return, including a pre-paid UPS return label.
  • Interlibrary loan materials will be delivered to a valid street address (not a PO Box) within the United States. 

Any interlibrary loan item may be delivered except materials that are restricted by the owning library. Occasionally libraries will only lend items under special conditions. The Marriott Library is obligated to abide by the owning library's conditions and special restrictions when borrowing materials. If the owning libraries require an item to be kept in the Marriott Library while on loan, we will not be able to mail it to the patron.

  • The due date will appear on a paper band wrapped around the front cover of the book. Items must be mailed back on or before this due date to avoid library fines. UPS tracking will be used to determine if items have been returned by the due date before overdue fines are charged to the patron's library account.
  • Loan periods are assigned by the owning library. 
  • Owning libraries have the right to recall Interlibrary Loan materials and you might be asked to return items before the due date. 
  • Items shipped to patrons living in Alaska or Hawaii may have shorter loan periods due to increased shipping time.
  • Interlibrary Loan materials are meant for short term use only.
  • Interlibrary loans that are delivered to a patron's home are not eligible for renewal. If you continue to need a book past the due date, please return it and request another copy of the book.
  • Return the item in the condition that it arrived. Do not remove any paperwork from the item. If damage occurred in the mail, please contact the Interlibrary Loan department immediately.
  • Return the item on or before the due date to avoid overdue fines being placed on your library account.
  • Use the pre-paid UPS shipping label enclosed. Place the new UPS shipping label over the old one. Any old shipping labels or stickers still visible need to be blacked out.
  • Package item securely and in the original packaging using adequate cushioning material and strong tape designed for shipping.
  • Take the package to your nearest UPS drop off location to mail.
