Industry Standards & Codes (ASTM, Fire, IEEE, ISO)

Learn about how to access industry standards and codes through the Marriott Library

Definition

"Simply stated, a standard is a document used repeatedly as a rule, guideline or definition. It is developed by a committee of experts who work within different areas of a particular industry – this ensures that the standard is well-rounded."

Additional Information

Standards are not freely available on the internet. Considerable time and money are involved in the creation and maintenance of technical standards. The organizations that develop standards, mostly non-profits, must recover their costs from low-volume sales (standards are not best sellers!).

Never purchase a standard though! Follow the steps on the Get a standard page to gain access through the library.
