Creating Accessible and Visually Consistent LibGuides

This guide provides comprehensive steps and guidelines for creating accessible and visually consistent LibGuides. Adhering to these practices ensures your guides are user-friendly, visually appealing, and meet accessibility standards.

Why use friendly URLs

Friendly URLs are concise, readable, and provide clear context about the guide or page content. They are an effective way to improve the accessibility and usability of your guides.

Each guide and each page of the guide should have a friendly URL.

Friendly URL Examples

Guide URL

  • Before: https://campusguides.lib.utah.edu/c.php?g=1287707
  • After: https://campusguides.lib.utah.edu/geography

Page URL

  • Before: https://campusguides.lib.utah.edu/c.php?g=1287707&p=9455888
  • After: https://campusguides.lib.utah.edu/geography/databases

Formatting Your Friendly URLs

Use lowercase and dashes between words (friendly-url-example)

  • Use the tab name when it’s short
  • If the tab is more than 4 words
    • You’ll need to be a little creative. Focus on what is easy to remember, spell, and gives the user enough enough info about what page/tab would be about if they didn’t have any more context
