Creating Accessible and Visually Consistent LibGuides

This guide provides comprehensive steps and guidelines for creating accessible and visually consistent LibGuides. Adhering to these practices ensures your guides are user-friendly, visually appealing, and meet accessibility standards.

General Layout Tips

  • Use pre-designed templates to maintain a uniform structure.
  • Include whitespace to prevent visual clutter.
  • Limit scrolling - consider splitting content onto another tab or page if possible.

Side Navigation

One single column of text is easier to read than multiple columns

While some guides allow for multi-column layouts we encourage you to try 2 per page for better readability - one column for navigation and the other for content

  • For many readers, text in a single column is easier to read than multiple columns. If you need to use multiple columns that’s ok, just make sure the reading order is clear.
  • If using a 3rd column - we encourage you to limit that content to contact, chatbox, and additional resources.

Update Your Guide's Navigation Layout

Side navigation and a single column format improves mobile experience. It also makes navigating guides with lots of tabs and sub-pages much easier on all devices.

How to change the layout

  • From the author view in your guide select the Guide Layout button > the Guide Navigation Layout > {System Default or Library Specific Options}

Sidebar Navigation Methodologies

There are two primary methodologies for structuring your sidebar navigation in LibGuides:

  1. Display Subpages in Navigation: This method shows all subpages within the sidebar navigation.
  2. Show Box Titles as Anchor Links: This option uses box titles as anchor links - labled "Show box-level navigation for selected page"

We recommend selecting one methodology for consistency and clarity. This guide utilizes the "Show box level navigation for selected page" method.

Changing Navigation on an Existing Guide

If your already constructed guide is set to top navigation—be mindful that when you switch to side navigation, columns can become invisible (as multiple columns attempt to consolidate into one) and you will have to reorder your boxes (Page menu → Reorder / Move → Boxes) to make sure all content is viewable to users.
