Creating Accessible and Visually Consistent LibGuides

This guide provides comprehensive steps and guidelines for creating accessible and visually consistent LibGuides. Adhering to these practices ensures your guides are user-friendly, visually appealing, and meet accessibility standards.

Headings and Accessibility

Headings are a great way to organize content on a page, improving both readability and accessibility. For users relying on screen readers, headings and subheadings provide essential navigation tools, allowing them to move through the page more efficiently.

In LibGuides, the following heading structure is automatically applied:

  • The Guide Title is always set as Heading 1.
  • Box Titles are always set as Heading 2.
  • Within a box, you can add additional headings (e.g., Heading 3, Heading 4, and so on) to further structure your content.

Add a Heading in LibGuides

  • Open the text editor or choose to add "Rich Text/HTML" to an existing box.
  • In the gray editing toolbar, locate the drop-down menu labeled "Format". This menu contains the "Paragraph Format" options, including heading levels.

  • Select the appropriate heading level (e.g., Heading 3, Heading 4).

Best Practices for Using Headings

  • Follow a logical order: Begin with Heading 3 for your first heading within a box, and use Heading 4 for any subheadings under it. Continue in sequence as needed.
  • Avoid skipping levels: For example, do not jump from Heading 3 to Heading 5 without including Heading 4.
  • Customize sizes if needed: If you don’t like the default size of a heading, you can adjust the font size after applying the heading style without losing the accessibility benefits.
