Creating Accessible and Visually Consistent LibGuides

This guide provides comprehensive steps and guidelines for creating accessible and visually consistent LibGuides. Adhering to these practices ensures your guides are user-friendly, visually appealing, and meet accessibility standards.

Branding

The Libraries on the University of Utah Campus share a libguide account - with each Library maintaining its own branding templates.  By applying the appropriate group to your guide you can ensure consistency in your guides branding.

Choose the correct "Group" for your guide.

  • From the author view in your guide select the pencil icon next to "Type/Group" at the top of the LibGuide page
  • Select the appropriate Type and Group for your guide

Choose Group in Libguides settings

Typography

To ensure consistency and accessibility, all text should adhere to the University of Utah Brand Guidelines and your Library's specific visual branding guidelines.

Proper Formatting

Text should be formatted using the Rich Text Editor tool to maintain consistency with Library branding. This tool ensures proper formatting.

Avoid Common Issues

Copying and pasting text from other sources can introduce unwanted HTML formatting, which may cause issues for assistive technologies and deviate from branding. To prevent this:

  • Use the “Paste as Plain Text” feature in the Rich Text Editor.
  • Regularly check the source view for excessive or unnecessary HTML code.
  • Avoid using custom fonts, special colors, or inline styles.
