Basic Definitions in MaxQDA
Project: Each unit of analysis is a project. They are saved in Project files. If some of the files that you are working with are too big, they will be saved in an external file associated with the project
Documents: The documents are the PDFs, Word, Excel, images, or other files that you plan to analyze.
Codes: Codes capture meaning in your data and represent occurrences that cannot be found by simple text-based searching. Codes can operate on different levels, depending on the depth of analysis as well as qualitative research methodology. Generally, as you are working, you will come across similar occurrences and want to classify them. This is coding.
Segments: Segments are parts of documents that are of interest to you. They are what correspond to codes you have assigned, and can be called up and highlighted for visualization purposes. In a text document, the segment will be a string of words. Segments for other file types that do not include words will look a little different, e.g. a recurring symbol in multiple paintings, similar excerpts from multiple interview videos, or a point on a map. Quotations can be of any size and exist independently from codes.
Memos: Reflections and writing about the process of making sense of the data. Memos can be linked to quotations, codes, or other memos.
Creating and backing up a new project in MAXQDA
To create a new project, click on the New Project button, give your project a name, and save it. MaxQDA recommends not saving to the cloud.
MAXQDA recommends backing up your project each time you work on it. If you want to re-save or move your project file manually, go to Home>Save Project As and save it where you would like it to go. However, you can also set your project to automatically back up by going to MAXQDA’s Preferences, which is a tiny gear icon in the upper right corner of the screen, and clicking on it. Then, click the Automatic Backups button in the left column, and turn on the toggle button next to Back up projects automatically. Choose the folder where you want to save your project (it should be on your local drive, not the cloud). Then, choose the time interval for the automatic backups, and then choose Save. This process is similar for both MAXQDA 22 and 24
