MAXQDA 2022 and 2024

This guide describes how to use the qualitative data analysis software MAXQDA

Documents and Document Groups

In order to do any work, you will need something to work on. MaxQDA supports a variety of file formats, including .rtf, .docx, .pdf, Excel, mp3, and mp4.  Check out the full list of supported documents here.

To import materials, click on Import in the  top ribbon and choose the type of document you want to import. For text click the Texts, PDFs, Tables button. Select the documents you want to add to your project. When possible, MaxQDA recommends importing your textual data as Word files. The top image shows the Import menu in MaxQDA 2022, while the second image shows it in MaxQDA 24.

Once your documents are imported, they will show up in the Document System in the upper right corner of the four-window page

Importing audio or video. To import an audio or video file, go to Import and choose Audio or Videos. MAXQDA will create a text document with the name of the media file and link that document to the media file. The media will be in a MAXQDA external file.

Importing focus group data. To import focus group data, select the Import option on the menu ribbon and the choose Focus Group Transcripts. MaxQDA will automatically code each participant’s words with a different code to make it easier to do analysis. However, to make this work, each switch in speakers must begin a new paragraph with the name of the participant and a colon after the name. For instance, each time Jake responded to a question, their response would be in a new paragraph labelled Jake: at the beginning. For more info, check out this page.

Importing survey data.To import survey data from Excel, you need to do some work setting up the document before importing it. The row headers must have information about the participants and the questions asked, and then you can choose Import>Survey Data. For more information, check out this page. You can also import survey data from SurveyMonkey, depending on your plan; see more information here.

Importing Images: You can import and code image segments by choosing Import>Images. You can select a piece of the image and then code that or code the entire image.

Finding Imported Documents in the Document System

Once you add the documents to your project, they will be in the left top window of the project layout in the Document System.

To remove a document from your project, hover over it in the Document System and click the red X that shows up next to it.

You can organize your documents in Document Groups, which function as folders to help you organize your research data. To create a new document group, go to the upper left panel, the Document System, click on the folder icon with a plus sign in front of it, and create a new group. You can name the group whatever you like and then drag and drop the relevant documents into that file.

You can double click any of the documents and they will show up in the center pane, the Document Browser
