MAXQDA 2022 and 2024

This guide describes how to use the qualitative data analysis software MAXQDA

Memos

Memos are areas for integration and reflection where you explore your process for analysis, your thoughts about your findings, and other descriptions of the project as a whole. They help you keep track of your findings and ideas.

You can  click on the Memos link in the top menu and choose Free Memo if you want to write some general findings or a project memo. You can also click on the Overview of Memos button under the Memos ribbon to see a list of the memos that you have created.

Memo Menu

There is a Memo toolbar found on the top menu of MaxQDA. The first image here shows the Memo toolbar in MaxQDA 24, while the bottom shows MaxQDA 22.

Document Memos

To create a memo for a document, right click on the document title in the Document System. In the window that opens, choose the Memo icon. In the memo window, you can write down your thoughts or findings about the document. If you have a subscription to MaxQDA 24, you can use the AI tools available in Document Summary to summarize the document. You can also drag and drop codes from the Code System into the Linked Codes section at the bottom of the memo. If you link your memo to a code, you can later access all of the memos that have been linked to that code. You can also drag and drop coded segments into the Linked coded segments section to help keep track of segments related to that memo

Code Memos

To create a code memo for a new code, you can right open the code window and add the memo in the Code Memo box.

If you want to add a memo to an already-created code, right-click on the code name, click the Memo option and then enter your memo in the window that opens

Segment Memos

You can also create segment memos by right-clicking on the document segment and then choosing Insert Memo for Selection.

Adding Comments

Comments are reflections on individual elements of your projects, like segments in a document. Comments should contain descriptive information about the materials that you are commenting on.

To add a comment to an uncoded  segment, you can highlight the segment and right click, which will open the coding menu. You can add a name for the code and then enter a comment about the text segment into the bottom window and click Okay.

To add a comment to a coded segment, you can right-click on the segment code and choose Edit Comment.

Then, type in your comment and click OK. Your comment will show up to the left of the document browser
