Activating Documents and Codes
To retrieve information about any specific code or document, that code or document must be activated. Next to each code in the Code System or document in the Document System is a very small open circle that appears when you hover over the document or code.
In order to see the specific work you have done with that document or code, you must click on the open circle. It will turn blue, and then the code or document will be highlighted in blue to let you know that it is working. When codes or documents are highlighted in blue, they are activated.
Viewing Coded Segments in Documents
In order to see the document segments to which a code has been assigned, activate the documents whose segments you want to review, as well as the codes you want to review. Then, click on the Retrieved Segments button at the very bottom of the screen. This will open a window where you can see all of the segments in your activated documents that have been coded with one of the activated codes. Each segment has a note below it explaining which document it is from and which code(s) are used in it. In the project below, I have activated the document PionkeRutledge_UniversalDesign and the codes Universal Design, accessibility, and Team challenges. This means that the Retrieved Segments window will only show me segments where those activated codes show up in that activated document. Below each segment is the name of the document where it came from, as well as the name of the activated code(s) used in that document. The zero next to accessibility means that no other codes have been used on this segment.
To look at this information further, you can click on the Overview of Retrieved Segments, which will generate a chart showing you information about each segment that has one of the codes that you activated and is in one of the documents that you activated.
You can click on the segment preview in the chart and see the full segment in the window above. The chart also shows additional information about the segment, such as what document it is in, how it is coded, and in what paragraph of the document it begins and ends.
You can change the columns that show in the chart by clicking on the Select Columns icon. Note: If you would like to see the preview of the segments, you must choose the Preview option as one of the columns in your chart. You can also use the options in the upper right corner of the chart to export your Overview of Retrieved Segments.
Comparing Documents or Document Groups
You can also compare documents or document groups. To explore documents quantitatively, start by clicking on Analysis and the Compare Cases & Groups.
To compare code frequencies across documents, choose the Quantitative (Code Frequencies) option. In the window that opens, drag the documents or document groups that you want to compare into the top window and the codes whose use you want to compare in the documents into the bottom window and click OK. In the window that opens, the comparison codes will be rows, while columns will be each document for comparison. The numbers will show how frequently one code is used in one document compared to another. You can use the icons in the upper part of the report to change these exact codes to percentages or manipulate the data in other ways. You can use the icons on the right side of the chart to export the data.
You can also compare code segments by following the same directions as above, but choosing Analysis>Compare Cases and Groups> Qualitative (Coded Segments) instead. The resulting chart will show the codes in the rows and the documents in the column. You can click on code to specifically compare segments in each document that used that code. You can also export this chart using the icons in the upper right corner.
Comparing Codes or Code Groups
MaxQDA also allows for the comparison of codes and code groups. To compare codes, choose Codes and the Code Comparison. In the window that opens, click the check box next to the codes that you want to compare and then click OK.
In the chart that opens, your documents will be the rows and each column will have the title of your code and then the code segments that use that code underneath it.
